I spy with my little eye… • Making predictions is a dangerous business, especially in a fluid and constantly changing environment such as the local motor industry. Brands come and go, models are updated or scrapped and every once in a while, a true showstopper arrives that takes the market by storm. LIANA REINERS looks into the proverbial crystal ball and speculates about some of the new rides that could reach our shores during 2024. Nothing is cast in stone, though – so don’t quote us!

Hitting the Chery jackpot • Chery is making its mark on the South African market and so far, the Chinese brand has been well received and is making a name for itself as an affordable luxury brand in the highly competitive compact SUV segment. ANTON WILLEMSE drove the latest model, the Tiggo 7 Pro Max AWD, at the local launch in Cape Town and shares his impressions.

A dash of spice • The Omoda brand, which forms part of the Chery South Africa group, recently launched its somewhat spicier C5 GT model locally. ANTON WILLEMSE attended the event and shares his initial impressions.

3 to 5 • Fun fact: Japan is famous for its kei (small) cars. Kei car regulations state that a vehicle cannot exceed 3.4m in length, 1.48m in width and 2m in height. As a result of these regulations, Suzuki Japan got creative and produced kei models for every taste and need, from sports cars to crossovers. The Jimny three-door falls perfectly into these specifications – 3.395m long, 1.475m wide and 1.725m – but ANTON WILLEMSE believes that with the five-door Suzuki has broken the mould by 340mm of extra length.

Bang for your buck

The magic of the moment • A trip to the well-known Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe is a bucket-list adventure for many. TONY YEO and a group of overlanding enthusiasts were fortunate enough to live this dream recently.

Take me to the water • With one trip to the Tibesti under his belt, GRAHAME MCLEOD’S fascination with the landlocked country at the crossroads of North and Central Africa, Chad, led him to do another trip to that country – this time, not only to the Tibesti region again, but also to view freshwater lakes in the sands and magnificent rock art in the Ennedi massif.

Exploring the untamed beauty • One of Africa’s biggest reserves, Etosha National Park treats visitor to a wide array of wildlife and boasts a massive salt pan you can see from space! It is also one of NOLENE KOTZE of Chasing Gravel’s favourite spots, and she shares some pro tips when travelling there.

Knowing the difference • Choosing between a 4x4 or AWD vehicle can be a daunting task, especially if you don’t know what the main differences between the two are. ANTON WILLEMSE delves deeper into the subject.
