LIFE Duran Duran

LIFE Duran Duran
Magazine

Duran Duran has been a force in the music world for more than 40 years—from their start as the house band in a Birmingham, England, nightclub to world (and MTV) domination, from a reset in the early '90s to their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. The band that delivered hits such as "Hungry Like the Wolf," "The Reflex," "Rio," "A View to a Kill," and many others have continued to perform and thrill. This remarkable keepsake edition from LIFE follows the boys from their humble beginnings in the teenage bedrooms of John Taylor and Nick Rhodes to their most recent performances, including Queen Elizabeth's 2022 Jubilee concert. The songs, the fashion, the videos, the screaming fans: It's all here.

DURAN DURAN

COMEBACK KIDS • But they never really left. The newly minted Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees continue to record, tour, and inspire their fans and peers.

FRIENDS OF MINE • Duran Duran was born from the imagination of two British teenagers. From there, it was simply a matter of securing the right bandmates—and a fabulous place to play.

HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF • The chemistry was effortless and the sound was tight—Britain took notice fast. So did (most of) the rest of the world.

The New Wave • In the early ’80s, Duran Duran and their fellow Brits (plus some cool Americans) helped usher in a stylish new synth-inflected sound.

BOYS ON FILM • With their stunning second album, Rio, and videos that would revolutionize Music Television, Duran Duran finally conquered the United States.

An American Interlude • Photographer Sheila Rock captured Duran Duran in California in the summer of 1982, when the band was on the cusp of hitting it big in the U.S.

NOTORIOUS • They seemed to be at the top of their game, but the band was starting to fray. After some side projects and internal conflicts, a slimmed-down Duran Duran faced an uphill battle into the 1990s.

MTV and Duran Duran • They were perhaps more integral than any other band to the success of Music Television and the very medium of the video.

ALL WE NEED IS NOW • “Ordinary World” reenergized the band and introduced them to a new generation of fans. They haven’t looked back since—and now they’re Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees.
